Case study
Works in an occupied GP practice
JKS London has carried out works at Riverside Medical Practice in Horsham, West Sussex, a busy GP practice that needed to keep serving patients throughout.
Primary care premises are open long hours and see a steady flow of patients, some of whom are unwell or vulnerable. Works have to be safe, clean and quiet enough not to disrupt consultations, and planned so that clinical services continue.
The client
Riverside Medical Practice is a GP practice in Horsham. Like most practices, its building combines consulting and treatment rooms, a waiting area and reception, and administrative space for clinical and support staff.
The brief and challenge
Working in a healthcare setting raises several considerations that are not present in an ordinary office:
- Patients, including elderly, unwell and vulnerable people, are present throughout the working day.
- Consulting and treatment rooms need to stay available, and confidentiality must be respected.
- Dust and debris must be controlled to support good infection prevention and control.
- Supplies to clinical equipment, IT and refrigeration, such as vaccine fridges, must be protected or interrupted only by agreement.
Our scope
The works included electrical and building elements typical of a GP practice, such as:
- Electrical works to clinical, reception and administrative areas.
- Lighting and small power suited to consulting and treatment rooms.
- Attention to emergency lighting and life-safety provisions.
- Building and fabric works and making good.
- Testing, certification and handover documentation.
How we delivered
We planned the works with the practice team so that clinics could continue. Our approach in healthcare settings typically combines careful scheduling with infection-control-aware working.
Around the clinics
Disruptive work and isolations are scheduled outside surgery hours or in rooms released by agreement with the practice.
Clean and contained
Work areas are segregated, dust is controlled and waste removed promptly, with rooms cleaned before being returned to clinical use.
Protecting critical supplies
Circuits serving clinical equipment, IT and refrigeration are identified first, so they can be protected or isolated only with the practice’s agreement.
All electrical work is completed to BS 7671 and certified, giving the practice the records it needs for its own compliance and for any inspection of the premises.
Outcome
Riverside Medical Practice received the works it needed while continuing to care for its patients. Careful planning, clean working and clear communication with the practice team allowed the building to remain in use, and the certification provided at handover supports the practice’s ongoing compliance.
The project reflects our wider public-sector and healthcare work, where the service always comes first. The same approach applies whether we are working in a small surgery or a large hospital: understand the clinical priorities, protect patients and staff, and leave clear records behind.
