Case study
Powering advanced manufacturing
JKS London has carried out installation and refurbishment works for Beta Type Ltd, a company working in additive manufacturing.
Additive manufacturing, often called industrial 3D printing, relies on specialist machines and supporting equipment that need dependable, well-designed electrical supplies. Industrial premises like these need a contractor who understands both the building and the process it supports.
The client
Beta Type Ltd works in the field of additive manufacturing, producing parts using industrial 3D-printing technology. Its premises combine production space for specialist equipment with the offices and support areas any growing business needs.
The brief and challenge
Industrial premises put particular demands on electrical installations. Production equipment may need dedicated three-phase supplies, protection suited to the load and a layout that can adapt as the business adds or moves machines. At the same time, offices, welfare areas and general lighting need to be safe and comfortable for staff.
Works also need to be planned around production. Every hour a machine is down is lost output, so isolations and disruptive tasks must be agreed carefully with the client.
Specialist manufacturing equipment can also bring its own requirements for supply quality, earthing and the environment around it, so the manufacturer’s installation guidance needs to be considered alongside BS 7671 when supplies are designed and installed.
Our scope
The works included installation and refurbishment elements typical of industrial premises, such as:
- Electrical installation works to production and support areas.
- Distribution and supplies suited to industrial equipment.
- Lighting and small power to working areas and offices.
- Building and fabric refurbishment elements.
- Testing, certification and handover documentation.
How we delivered
Our approach to industrial work starts with understanding the process. We discuss with the client which equipment is critical, what supplies it needs and when it can be safely isolated, then plan the works around that.
Right-sized supplies
Supplies and protection are selected to suit the equipment being served, with capacity considered for future expansion.
Production-aware planning
Isolations and disruptive work are scheduled with the client to protect production time.
One contractor
Electrical, M&E and building fabric works under one roof, so fewer trades need co-ordinating on site.
Completed work is tested and certified to BS 7671, giving the client a clear record of the installation for insurers, future maintenance and any later alterations.
Outcome
Beta Type gained an installation suited to the demands of its manufacturing process, delivered with attention to production time and backed by the certification needed to keep the premises compliant. Because the installation is documented, future changes, such as adding new equipment, can be planned with confidence.
The project is a good example of the industrial work we undertake for commercial clients across London and the South East.
